Glencairn iPod

iPod MindMaps

We wrapped up the Glencairn iPod project with the children working to create mindmaps about their iPod experiences and the great news that the class have raised funds to buy some iPods for the school!
Keep an eye on the blog next session to see how the new primary sevens introduce the ipods to the rest of the school.

Wikipanion

Wikipanion is my favourite app from the ipod touch.I think this is a great app because when I was doing research on authors or anything else for our novel study I used Wikipanion. To use it you type in something you want to research and it takes you straight to Wikipedia instead of going into Google and then looking up Wikipedia.I like this app because it is a quick way of finding information and I highly recommend using this app if you ever need to do research.

Google Earth

I use Google Earth to help develop my navigating and geography skills. I like to look around the world and see the hotels and countries I have stayed at. Google Earth allows you to zoom in to landmarks, hotels, sea's and much more. It also gives you information about specific places in the world. Its great fun to use.

Using the WhiteBoard App

Our favourite app is the Whiteboard. We like it because we can communicate with each other for work or fun purposes. It allows two people to create a shared picture together or chat. We have used it to set each other maths sums.

Comic Twist

Yesterday, Mr Johnston showed us a new app called Comic Twist. We made comic strips of famous explorers such as Christopher Columbus, David Livingstone, Marco Polo and Hernando Cortez. We saved pictures from our photo library and added speech bubbles and captions to explain our pictures. This was a fun way to present what we had learned about our famous explorer. We uploaded these onto First Class to allow other people to see our comics strips.

SonicPics Test

We had a quick test of the SonicPics app, it lets you make slide shows with pictures and sound. We need to open the movie in iTunes and create an ipod version (from the advanced menu) to get the slideshow to work on the blog.

Animal Lunes

We used the ipods to find photos of animals and wrote lunes about them.
Lunes are a simple form of poem based on haiku, you can read about lunes on wikipedia. We didn't have much time so there is the odd typo in our poems, but they look and sound great. Watch and Listen:

Research

In class, we all chose a Significant Scots to research. We used Safari on our ipods to get information on our chosen Scot. Some people took a snapshot of information and images.Other people copied and pasted key information into their notes. We used this information to create a personal project. It was very helpful having our own personal ipod to collect and store information. We were able to access our notes easily, instead of having to wait for a class computer.

Magnificent Maths

We are using the calculator to help us solve difficult mathematical problems. It has helped us improve our mental arithmatic and is very helpful if we get stuck in our maths tasks. We have also used a wide range of maths apps on our i pods such as Times Tables,Pop Maths,Basic Maths,FreeFling,MiTables Lite and Matho. These have helped us to calculate sums mentally and they are a great finishing task.We really enjoy using the ipods to help with our maths.

Maps in reading

In reading, we have been learning about the Outer Hebrides because our new book, The Santa Maria is set here. We used our ipod touches to look at the maps and find the Outer Hebrides. We had fun doing this because we got to use Google Earth. 8 out of 10 of us found it easier than using an atlas and more handy.

Introducing the iPod Touches

This afternoon I took the set of iPod touches out to Glencairn Primary. In a very quick hour and a quarter the children worked out how to use the dictionary, calculator, create martians and pass their creations to each other using Bump.
Each child has an iPod assigned to them with over 50 apps and a couple of hundred podcast episodes loaded.
The children seem to enjoy themselves and I had a great time. I am looking forward to hearing how the children get on using the iPods in there class.
Hopefully class are going to use this blog to keep a record of what they find out and how they use the iPods.
