Blog

Final reports from both authorities have been prepared and submitted in good time to the national organisations. This represents the formal end of the two year project. Details of the project and its outcomes have also been added to the European Shared Treasure site. The site contains a link to this blog where all of the details, reports and presentations over the two years are available. We have also been able to demonstrate the use of the blog as a means of communication and the use of the flipcams.

As the lead player in the project I woudl like to express my thanks to all of my colleagues both in Scotland and Germany who have worked so hard to ensure that this project was such a success. We have shared hopes after this initial contact Clyde Valley and North Lanarkshire will continue to work with Schotten and our colleagues in Giessen on future projects.

1. Die deutsche Delegation wird zur Clyde Valley High School gebracht. Nach der offiziellen Begrüßung durch QIO Robert Dalzell und den Schulleiter Ian Sommerville wird das Tagungsprogramm durchgesprochen und von beiden Seiten akzeptiert. Im Rahmen des Vorgesprächs werden die Erfahrungen mit dem Besuch der deutschen Schulleiter in NL im Rahmen des Shadowing-Projektes ausgetauscht und über die Frage des Gegenbesuches diskutiert. Zeitpunkt und Personen stehen noch nicht fest. Die schottische Seite ist gehalten, die dazugehörigen Schritte einzuleiten. Der Gegenbesuch im Rahmen des QUILL-Projektes in Hessen wird besprochen. Es ist der Abschlussbesuch im Rahmen des gesamten Projektes und wird die Bearbeitung des Abschlussberichtes im Mittelpunkt haben.

2. Early Years presentation und discussion - Therese Henery

Der Vortrag wird im Blog veröffentlicht. Es gibt für die Altersgruppe der 0-5 Jährigen 56 Vorschulklassen, sieben Vorschulen, 17 Vorschulzentren und fünf Vorschulklassen in Schulen für Behinderte. Weiterhin gibt es 41 Einrichtungen im Schulbereich für 3-5 Jährige, die auf dem freiwilligen und vom Staat unabhängigen Sektor arbeiten.

Es gibt ca. 4200 Vollzeitplätze und 8400 Teilzeitplätze.

In der Diskussion wird nach der Ausbildung der in diesen Einrichtungen arbeitenden Mitarbeiterinnen gefragt. Es gibt im Unterschied zu unserer Ausbildung (Erzieher/innen; Sozialpädagogen/innen) keine derartige Ausbildung. Allerdings gibt es Qualifikationskurse. Das Problem sind die Zeiten, da in der Regel die Aufnahme der Kinder erst um 9:30 Uhr stattfindet und bei den Teilzeitplätzen um 12:30 Uhr endet. Das Council ist bemüht, den SVorschulbereich qualitativ und quantitativ zu verbessern (s.a. "Summary of the service plan for learning and leisure service 2010).

3. Besuch der Fremdsprachenabteilung (ML-Department)

Die deutsche Gruppe erhält die Gelegenheit, eine Unterrichtsstunde im zweiten Jahr zu besuchen (entspricht in etwa unserem achten Schuljahr). 10 Schüler/innen sitzen mit einer Lehrkraft an zusammengestellten Tischen und bearbeiten gemeinsam vorbereitete Fragen und Antworten. Weitere drei Schüler/innen sitzen gesondert an Tischen und arbeiten still.

Zur Frage der Lehrerausbildung in den Fremdsprachen wird auf die Möglichkeit verwiesen, dies im Internet nachzulesen. Nach Aussagen der beteiligten Lehrkräfte waren früher zwei Fächer vorgeschrieben z.B. Deutsch und Französisch und ein Praktikum im Ausland von mindestens drei Monaten bis zu einem Jahr während des dreijährigen Studiums. Heute gibt es nur noch eine Ausbildung in einem Fach und kein Praktikum mehr. Das Lehramtsstudium wurde de facto in das praktische Jahr an der Schule verlegt.

An den Schulen gibt es das Problem, dass die Schüler nach dem Einführungsjahr für zwei Jahre Fächer wählen können, d.h. sie können, müssen aber nicht, auch Fremdsprachen wählen. Mit der Wahl verpflichten sie sich für zwei Jahre, den Unterricht in diesem Fach zu besuchen. Danach könne sie für die letzten beiden Jahre neu wählen, das kann das gleiche Fach sein, können aber auch ganz andere Fächer sein. In den Fremdsprachen sinkt in der Regel die Beteiligung in der letzten beiden Jahren.

4. Nach der Mittagspause findet die Kommunikationsphase mit dem Marratech-Programm mit Schülern/innen der Vogelsbergschule statt. Aufgrund der Zeitverschiebung gab und gibt es immer wieder Terminschwierigkeiten. Die Schüler/innen bemühten sich, sich gegenseitig vorzustellen, redeten kurz über das Wetter und die Schule. Die Kommunikationsphase war aber insgesamt mit 20 min zu kurz. Trotzdem hatte man den Eindruck, dass ihnen der persönliche Kontakt wichtig war. Es wurde vereinbart, persönlichen Kontakte über E-Mail und den Blog zu vertiefen.

5. Treffen im Goethe-Institut Glasgow

Frau Borgmann begrüßt die Teilnehmer und berichtet über die Aktivitäten des Goethe-Instituts und insbesondere die Kontakte und kleineren Projekte mit der Clyde Valley High School. Insbesondere der Auftritt zweier deutscher Kleinkünstler an der Schule stieß auf große Begeisterung, weil gezeigt wurde, wie rasch über eine musikalische Botschaft auch Sprache vermittelt werden kann. Das Goethe-Institut ist an einer Fortsetzung des Projektes interessiert.

6. Parent Voice presentation – Jim Beers

Aufgrund der Gesetzeslage stehen den schottischen Eltern eine Reihe von Beteiligungsrechten zu, die sich im wesentlichen wenig von denen des hessischen Gesetzes über die Elternmitbestimmung unterscheiden. Eine Ausnahme ist die starke Vertretung der Eltern in Schottland bei der Auswahl von Schulleitungsmitgliedern und Schulleitern. Hier sind sie aktiv in den Auswahlgremien vertreten.

Der Vortrag wird in den Blog gestellt.

7. Vorbereitung des Abschlussberichtes

Sehr ausführlich und detailliert wird der Entwurf des Abschlussberichtes (R. Dalzell) besprochen, die Abgrenzungen zu den jeweiligen Regionalberichten werden verdeutlicht. PD und HS legen Wert darauf, dass sie eine Dokumentation des Projektes vorlegen werden. Abschließend wird noch einmal der Besuch der schottischen Seite in Hessen Anfang Juni gesprochen.

The final mobility or visit to Giessen has now taken place. During the visit colleagues had an opportunity to hear about the Conference held in Bad Nauheim in May to report on the project and the added-value it brings to over 45 delegates. The comparative study carried out by Herbert Schnell and Peter Doebrich was also part of the conference. German head teachers who had taken part in a Comenius Job-shadowing visit to North Lanarkshire in February 2011, enthused about the benefits of job-shadowing and encouraged their colleagues attending the conference to apply in the future.

On the Thursday afternoon we were given a guided tour of Marburg by Willi Lueckel from the Vogelsbergschule in Schotten. Participants were also introduced to the German custom of "Kaffee und Kuchen"!

Friday morning found us at the "EperiMINTa" science centre in Frankfurt where Herbert Schnell was a tremendous host as he described the foundation and concept of the "ExperiMINTa". Following a tour of the centre we had time to discuss aspects of the final report and clarify any outstanding contributions required to complete the report. We concluded with both schools looking to consider Comenius bi-lateral funding to support the continuation of the contacts made, both authorities committed to working together on future funding applications and colleagues in Germany and Scotland keen to take up job-shadowing opportunities in the future.

Plans for our forthcoming visit are well ahead and we should be in Giessen next Wednesday night. We are all looking forward to meeting our colleagues in Germany and putting together the last parts of the final report. The head teacher from Clyde Valley, Mr Sommerville will be accompanied by Mr Wright his depute head. Colleagues from NLC will be Ms Henery, QIO for Early Years, and Mr McGhee, QIO for Science.

Let us hope the ash cloud clears before 1 June!

Presentations from the visit to North Lanarkshire from 11-14 May 2011.

Today we spent the morning in Clyde Valley High school where we had a presentation on Nursery provision in North Lanarakshire by Therese Henery. This was followed by home-made baking Clyde Valley style! S3 pupils had baked scones, shortbread as well as caramel shortcake for us to enjoy with our morning coffee!

We then joined a third year German class and we all helped pupils prepare speaking and writing tasks. The German pupils very much appreciated the support from "Real Germans"! After lunch we linked up with our partners in Germany using the Marratech software.

In the afternoon we visited our partners in the Goethe Institut in Glasgow. Frau Lilo Boergmann reviewed the support provided by the Institut to Clyde Valley High over the last two years of the project where the emphasis had been on promoting young people to read challenging books in German and advising them on the importnce of foreign language learning. This was followed by German home baking and coffee! Needless to say our German partners were glad to get back to the hotel for a rest!

We are all eagerly anticipating the arrival of our German colleagues this week. We have inputs on nursery education and on parental involvement planned as well as time in school. We will also be visiting the Goethe Institut in Glasgow to hear how they have been supporting the school over the last two years. We will have time to reflect on the project and prepare the joint final report.

Wir wünschen euch allen ein schönes Osterfest.

Letzten Mittwoch hat sich der Comeniuskurs zum Eierfärben getroffen. Die SchülerInnen haben Osternester für das Lehrerzimmer zusammengestellt.

Traditionel verschenkt man zu Ostern gefärbte Eier. Die, die wir nicht essen, verwenden wir zum Ostereierweitwurf :-)

It is hard to believe that we are now coming to the end of our two year project. We have achieved a great deal and I am delighted that the recent Marratech links have proved so successful. We have certainly achieved all of the objectives as set out in our initial plan. Now we must aim to sustain interest beyond the end of the project. I believe that the best way to do this is to encourage the Marratech links with pupils as much as possible in the coming weeks and the enthusiasm of the pupils will ensure that contact continues.

We are currently preparing for the final visits to Scotland and Germany. We look forward to meeting one another and sharing expertise once again.

In CVHS the week before the start of the Spring Holidays is always Charities Week, when the Sixth Year all join together to raise money for charity. This year's chosen charity is Erskine Hospital and all money raised is given to this cause. This year the pupils are aiming to raise at least £4000.

They do this by organising various events eg on Monday they held a Coffee Morning and Raffle and today they had a Departmental X Factor at lunchtime. Modern Languages was superbly represented by Elaine Osprey and Liz Clarke aka Abba supported in the background by some of the S5/6 German pupils with their banners.

Here in CVHS the third year 'Xcel' group and the second year 'Cool in School' group have been busy making Easter chicks to sell around the school. They then use the money to fund their ongoing projects eg buying plants, garden equipment etc for the school.

First year classes in the Modern Languages department in CVHS have recently been learning about Fasching in Germany. We have used Power Point presentations and have also been watching the German News programmes ( Tagesschau ) to see many of the parades that took place on Rosenmontag. The pupils all thoroughly enjoyed finding out about how Fasching is celebrated in different areas of Germany.

They also loved making and decorating their own masks.

We are looking forward to hearing more about Easter in Germany when we link up with the Vogelsbergschule next week using Marratech.

Wir traten unsere Reise am 12.01.11 an. Um 4 Uhr morgens sollten wir uns an der Schule treffen, da uns Toni (unser Hausmeister) nach Frankfurt an den Flughafen bringen wollte. Wir starteten pünktlich und kamen gegen 09h15 in Barcelona an. Dort erwartete uns schon Laura, die das Projekt in Spanien leitete. Nach einer längeren Busfahrt erreichten wir unsere Unterkunft in Calafell. Als wir dann unsere Zimmer bezogen hatten, gingen wir an den Strand um etwas Ruhe zu finden. Danach gingen wir zusammen mit Hugo, der Laura unterstützte, einkaufen. Nachdem wir alles eingekauft hatten, gingen wir zurück, legten uns etwas hin und warteten auf die anderen Länder. Am Abend trafen wir uns alle in einem italienischen Restaurant, das für uns reserviert war und aßen zusammen mit den anderen zu Abend.

Am zweiten Tag mussten wir früh am Morgen aufstehen, da wir einen Termin in einer Grundschule hatten in der Laura und Hugo als Lehrer tätig sind. Sie führten uns durch die Schule und wir durften am spanischen Unterricht teilnehmen. Anschließend gab es ein typisch spanisches Menü. Nachdem wir einige Stunden in der Schule verbrachten, besuchten wir in Santa Oliva einige römisch-germanische Sehenswürdigkeiten. Spät am Abend bereiteten uns die Eltern der Schüler ein Abendessen zu.

Am nächsten Morgen fuhren wir gemeinsam mit dem Zug nach Tarragona. Dort führte uns Laura durch die Stadt und zeigte uns unter anderem auch das Amphitheater, das Stadtzentrum und die römische Stadtmauer. Danach durften wir uns frei bewegen. Wir begaben uns sofort, da wir großen Hunger hatten, in ein edles Restaurant namens McDonalds. Später trafen wir uns in einem Eiscafé, um den weiteren Ablauf des Tages zu besprechen. Ein Teil der Gruppe blieb und besichtigte weitere Sehenswürdigkeiten. Der Rest, darunter wir, fuhr mit dem Zug zurück nach Calafell. Zurück in unseren Apartments beschlossen wir, den Rest des Tages am Strand zu verbringen. Abends trafen wir uns dann wieder mit unserer Gruppe im Restaurant und aßen zu Abend.

Unseren letzten Tag verbrachten wir in Barcelona. Nachdem wir uns die Kathedrale von Barcelona angeschaut hatten, durften wir uns frei bewegen. Als wir uns nach ein paar Stunden wieder in der U-Bahn trafen, fuhren wir nach Calafell, um von dort aus zu einem gemeinsamen Treffen mit der Bürgermeisterin zu gehen. Es gab ein großes gemeinsames Abendessen mit allen und es wurden Geschenke überreicht.

Am Sonntagmorgen mussten wir uns beeilen, da unser Bus nach Barcelona schon auf uns wartete. Wir verabschiedeten uns und fuhren zum Flughafen. Dort warteten wir auf unser Flugzeug und flogen zurück nach Deutschland. Toni erwartete uns bereits in Frankfurt und fuhr uns zurück nach Hause.

Today we had our "Faschingsturniere" at the VBS.
The students and stuff had a lot of fun.

As a result of the links developed with Hessen North Lanarkshire was pleased to host six German head teachers during the week beginning 28 February 2011. Six schools, including Clyde Valley, hosted teh head teachers as they found out about life as a head teacher in a Scottish school. The whole week was a tremendous success and we had the privilege of hosting a meeting with the German Consul General, Herr Wolfgang Moessinger. He is pictured below together with the Scottish and German head teachers and Christine Pollock, Executive Director of Learning and Leisure Services. (Picture to ba added from my home PC)

Today at lunchtime 7 Clyde Valley pupils from both S2 and S3 took part in a live link with pupils in the Vogelsbergschule. After a few initial problems where computers on both sides were freezing we finally managed to establish contact using Marratech.

The pupils from both schools spoke to each other for about 15-20 minutes on a variety of topics such as the type of music they like, what they do in their freetime and about the subjects they study at school. It was good for both groups to be able to see and hear each other and they all quickly got used to speaking and then waiting to allow someone from the other group to speak.

The pupils all found this a very worthwhile exercise and is yet another way they can practise their linquistic skills and also make new contacts.It will also provide both sets of pupils with another medium through which they can learn about the customs and culture of both countries.

We are all pleased it went so well and hopefully this will be the first of many such links.

At Vogelsbergschule Schotten we are having an epidemic kind of flu. In some classes more than 60 % of the pupils are ill. And of course, teachers are ill, too. Whatever we have started to put on the blog - work is still in progress. As a teacher you never know who is missing in class. Most of the pupils have been ill for more than one week, some have been missing for even two weeks and more. At the moment we are having a second wave of the flu. Same procedure as already been told. We are desperately trying to keep our school working.
